Years ago, a tooth that was damaged or diseased often required removal. Extraction of a tooth comes with other problems including choosing a replacement solution. However, thanks to continued dental advances, patients who have a problematic tooth can visit a dentist in the San Ramon area to save their smile from extraction. Diseased and damaged teeth can be fixed with root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy is a procedure many patients dread. Fortunately, the rumors of a painful treatment are not true! Instead, patients have proper sedation and anesthetics during the procedure and do not feel a thing. In fact, it is often the pain and discomfort of the infection that brings patients to the dental office for relief.
The procedure, also known as endodontic therapy, is done right in the dental chair. One of our dentists, Drs. Parag R. Kachalia or Charity L. Duncan will assess the smile beforehand with an x-ray to determine if root canal therapy can help. Once it has been decided to move forward with the treatment, the patient is made comfortable with anesthetics and sedation if necessary. The dentist drills into the tooth, accesses the dental pulp for removal, and then disinfects the inner canals of the tooth. Gutta percha fills the empty space and composite resin bonding is placed to seal off the tooth after treatment.
Some patients may also benefit from the placement of a dental crown following their root canal procedure. This is because the tooth may become weak and brittle, making it more susceptible to damage. Placing a dental crown can give the tooth an extra layer of protection it needs to function for many years to come.
