Avoiding Bad Habits

San Ramon CA Dentist Warns Against Bad Habits

As a San Ramon CA Dentist, Dr. Kachalia has seen many patients with cracked teeth. There are certain things that you can do to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Certain habits should be avoided; otherwise, they can eventually lead to cracked teeth, or worse, lost teeth.

Dentists and Dental Innovations recommend avoiding the following:

  1. Don't chew on ice: Many people subconsciously chew on ice. Ice is extremely hard and sometimes even sharp. Chewing on ice can cause your teeth to crack or fall out. I can also cause damage to your gums. Try and be aware of this habit an avoid it whenever possible.

  2. Playing sports without a mouth guard: Sports can be dangerous, especially high-contact sports. It is important to protect your face, as well as your mouth. Wearing a mouth guard can go a long way in preventing injury and protecting your teeth. You can wear an over-the-counter mouth guard or talk to your San Ramon CA Dentist about having a custom mouth-guard made.

  3. Don't drink soda: Soda has a high-sugar content and could damage your teeth. Not only that, but it is highly acidic and phosphoric. If you do drink soda, try to rinse it down with some water afterwards. Soda can have up to 11 teaspoons of sugar per serving!

  4. Don't use your mouth as a tool: Sometimes we need to get a better grip on something, and our teeth seem convenient. Continuously using your teeth as a tool puts them at risk of cracking and chipping. Ask a friend or family member for help if you can't get something open, don't use your teeth.

  5. Don't chew on pencils: While concentrating hard at work, many people have the habit of chewing on their pencils. If you tend to chew on things while stressed or working hard, chew on sugarless gum! Sugarless gum containing xylitol can help increase saliva flow and help to prevent cavities.
