San Ramon Dentist Explains Why An Early Visit To The Dentist Can Benefit Your Child's Dental Health

We understand that parents certainly have a lot on their plate when it comes to their children. Their arms are full with responsibilities and it can be difficult to tell what the best choice is for your kids when there are a number of great decisions. Thankfully, your San Ramon dentist is here to make it easier for you; below, we'll discuss when your children should visit the dentist for the first time and how to ensure that their smile is healthy and strong in between appointments.

All parents have different answers to the question, "when should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?" It may seem difficult, but the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents bring them by their first birthday. That age can seem too early, but there may be instances where your children are at risk for early childhood cavities. We want to prevent this as much as possible, which is why an early visit is never a bad thing!

More than 1 in 4 children in the United States suffer from at least one cavity by the age of 4 and many children can have one or more cavities by the age of 2. This is an alarming statistic, but isn't always taken as seriously as it should. There are parents who believe that extensive dental care for their children's baby teeth isn't totally necessary since they're going to fall out anyway, but that just isn't true! When a child's baby teeth aren't healthy, it's affecting the surrounding gums and area that will eventually affect the permanent, adult teeth that grow in their place. If their adult teeth grow in an area surrounding by bacteria and infections, it'll affect those teeth, as well.

Don't be afraid to ask us about helpful tips and tricks to ensure the importance of your child's dental care at home—that's what we're here for! It can be as simple as switching their toothpaste or making brushing their teeth fun and rewarding. Children are happy to follow in their parents' footsteps and look up to them, so we believe that setting an example like this will encourage them to do the same.
