Why Snacking Is Dangerous

San Ramon Family Dentists Recommend Eliminating The Habit Of Snacking To Save Your Teeth

Snacking is a favorite past time for millions of people, enjoying convenient bags of chips, pretzels, chocolates and candies in between their main meals. While it sounds fun, snacking is an extremely harmful habit when it comes to your oral health. When you snack, you're harming your teeth more than you would simply eating three meals a day! Below, your San Ramon family dentists explain why snacking hurts your teeth and what are some alternatives to the popular, harmful snacks.

Although the idea of snacking seems beneficial if you're hungry in between meals, you're harming your teeth because you're constantly eating. Your teeth aren't given enough time to heal from being broken down by the foods and drinks you're consuming. After you eat, your teeth are weakened and vulnerable because the bacteria and food particles have broken down the minerals that are coated on the surface of your teeth that work to keep them strong.

The time in between your meals gives your saliva enough time to recreate those minerals in order to coat your teeth once more. The snacks like chips and candies are still continuously hurting your teeth, so you're not giving them any relief! On top of that, you're less likely to brush your teeth after every meal you have, nonetheless after each snack you have. Plus, brushing your teeth more than two or three times a day is harmful, too.

If you're still tempted to snack, try substituting the harmful snacks for ones like apples, celery, carrots, and a majority of fruits and vegetables. But it's recommended that the habit of snacking is completely erased so you won't be tempted to continue.
