Purpose Of Porcelain Crowns

San Ramon Dentists On The Power Of Porcelain

At Innovative Dental Concepts, Drs. Parag Kachalia, DDS and Charity Duncan, DDS work closely to assist patients in achieving the smiles of their dreams. Their team is dedicated to working with individuals in addressing common dental concerns. San Ramon area patients often visit the dentist for general services such as cleanings and examinations, though there may be times that additional needs should be addressed. Situations may arise in which patients may require the placement of a dental crown.

What is a dental crown? A dental crown is a porcelain restoration that is commonly custom-made for a patient. It may be referred to as a "cap" because it covers the natural tooth structure offering a layer of protection for the tooth underneath. This may be done for a variety of reasons.

Large Fillings

When patients have large cavities, the fillings may take up a large portion of the patient's tooth structure. In situations such as this, the structure of the tooth is compromised and it may become weaker. Weak teeth may break easily with chewing and biting forces, so the placement of a dental crown over the tooth is recommended.

Root Canal Therapy

When root canal therapy has been performed, it eliminates the dental pulp which keeps the tooth "alive." Without the nerves and blood supply, the tooth may become brittle and weak. Covering a tooth following a root canal will ensure the structure is protected against daily use.

Breakage

If a tooth has been chipped or cracked, it doesn't always need to be extracted. Most dentists are able to salvage the tooth by covering it with a crown as another layer of protection and strength.

Dental Implants

Replacing missing teeth with a dental implant often requires the placement of a dental crown over the abutment. This acts as a false tooth and allows the patient the chance to restore the function and aesthetics of their smile quickly and easily.
